Percocet is the brand name medication for the opioid oxycodone. It’s a semi-synthetic opioid synthesized in labs to offer relief from pain. It is meant to be administered in hospital settings and prescribed in the short term for severe pain. Yet, oxycodone is often abused by people to get high. In what ways do people illicitly use Percocet?

Can You Snort Percocet?

Percocet comes in pill form for prescribed pain treatment. But people snort Percocet as a way to use it recreationally. Sometimes people abuse oxycodone for pain but it’s also used specifically for the high. By crushing and snorting the tablets, the individual experiences quicker effects because it absorbs into the central nervous system more quickly.

How Does Percocet Affect the Body?

Oxycodone is a potent opioid medication for chronic and acute pain. Notably, it’s typically not a first-line medication, meaning individuals may receive a prescription after other options have not been effective enough. Opioids like Percocet act on opioid receptors in the brain to artificially flood the system with positive chemical messengers. Results of taking opioids can include euphoria, relaxation, slowed breathing, and reduced stress. Understandably, addiction is developed when a person keeps desiring these effects.

The different ways people abuse substances slightly change their results, such as how quickly they can be felt. For example, snorting has faster results than ingesting a pill, and injecting it is even quicker.

Risks of Percocet Abuse

There are many risks of Percocet abuse. In fact, opioids in general are dangerous when abused. Their usage is monitored by the United States government to reduce addiction and overdose cases. But still, the opioid crisis continues. Taking too much of any opioid can lead to overdose, when the body is overwhelmed and starts to shut down. If a person doesn’t receive help in time, their overdose can lead to a coma or death.

Signs and Symptoms of Opioid Misuse

It’s not always easy to tell when someone is misusing opioids, especially if they have a prescription but aren’t following it correctly. However, some typical signs and symptoms of opioid misuse are:

  • Cravings
  • Sneaky behavior
  • Doctor shopping
  • Loss of interest in anything but opioids
  • Social withdrawal
  • Neglecting responsibilities
  • Inability to quit
  • Changes in appetite
  • Insomnia
  • Fatigue
